NCDOT breaks ground on section of Sanford Bypass

At a special ceremony on Monday, State Transportation Secretary Gene Conti, NC Board of Transportation member David Burns, Congressman Bob Etheridge, and other local and state officials broke ground on a section of the Sanford Bypass from NC-42 to NC-87 in Sanford. The ceremony took place at the site of the southern section of the bypass.
"The bypass has been a longtime coming," Conti said. "Once completed, it will be a connector to Fort Bragg and Greensboro and will improve traffic flow for Sanford businesses."
The $26.7 million contract was awarded to D.H. Griffin Infrastructure of Greensboro. More than 55 new people are being hired to work on the project, along with more than 20 subcontractors.
The Sanford Bypass marks a milestone for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It was recently announced as the 10,000th ARRA project by Vice President Joe Biden.
The southern section of the Sanford Bypass is expected to be completed by the end of 2012. At that time, more than 18,000 vehicles per day are expected to utilize this section of the bypass.
