Etheridge Announces $333,000 Grant for Chatham Non-Profit to Protect Women and Children
U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (NC-02) announced last week that the Pittsboro-based Family Violence and Rape Crisis Services will receive a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) in the amount of $333,839 to help advocates educate the public on recognizing and preventing sexual assault.
"These funds will make our community safer and our citizens more secure," Etheridge said. "This grant will protect women and children and create the jobs that place workers and services in our communities to reduce and eventually eliminate family violence. We must continue to prioritize public safety and economic security to ensure our state's most vulnerable citizens are cared for."
DoJ awarded the grant from its Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking Assistance Program. The primary purpose of the initiative is to enhance the safety of child, youth and adult, victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.
Grant funds are used to support programs that encourage collaboration among anti-domestic violence service providers, law enforcement agencies and the court system. By increasing the safety of women and children in rural communities these areas can become more productive and improved places to live and work.
Founded in 1982, Pittsboro-based Family Violence & Rape Crisis Services has provided support to battered women and sexual assault victims in Chatham County. FVRC assists victims and their families with services such as 24-hour crisis intervention, shelter, court advocacy and support groups.
