Etheridge Presents $607,500 Recovery Grant to Pittsboro Volunteer Fire & Rescue

U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) today presented a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the amount of $607,500 to the Pittsboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

"Public safety and economic security go hand in hand," Etheridge said. "The Pittsboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue will put these grants to good use to improve their facilities, improve their preparation and better position the department to continue serving the citizens of Pittsboro and Chatham County."

The award was made available as part of more than $380 million in grants funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to pay for fire station construction and port and transit security initiatives. The nationwide investments will also play a role in creating jobs and stimulating local economies. The grant will be used to strengthen community and emergency response efforts through fire station repairs, upgrades and new construction.

The Pittsboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department was established in 1936. It is a combination department made up of 32 firemen, 20 of which are volunteers.
